Description
Rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and gems that Pompeians brought with them in a desperate attempt to escape the tragic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, along with statues of the muses Polymnia, the muse of sacred poetry, and Erato, the muse of love poetry, form the heart of Venustas, an exhibition conceived as an in-depth exploration of a research project begun last year with Vanity, a comparison of jewels from the Greek world and those of Pompeii. Venustas—a term that referred to beauty, grace, elegance, decorum, but also joy—reminds us of the "beauty of the mind" and the importance of a steadfast spirit, which supports beauty because "only the spirit remains intact until death" [Ovid].
