This basic rule of prudence, followed in recent years at Pompeii, has optimized the work of archaeologists without depriving the public of extraordinary discoveries. This is the case with the very recent discoveries at the House of the Thiasus, which, after a year of work, has brought to light—2,000 years after the disastrous eruption of Vesuvius that buried the Campanian town under ash and lapilli—a megalograph of comparable quality to that of the famous Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii itself. The subject refers to the rites of female initiation (the "thiasus") into the cult of Dionysus.
