Description
Over the past few decades, Pompeii has seen a succession of new excavations, discoveries, studies, and reinterpretations, prompting us to create a new edition of this "historical" dossier, expanding and updating its contents. The town of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, a cataclysm that resulted in the death of many of its inhabitants. Since then, homes, public buildings, furnishings, artworks, and everyday objects remained sealed away until their discovery and the first excavations in the mid-18th century. Today, what has been unearthed represents one of the most valuable and significant examples of the context in which daily life took place in a Roman community. The artistic finds are of the highest caliber, and the Pompeii Archaeological Park is one of the most visited archaeological sites by international tourists.
