Description
A comprehensive investigation of the condition of women in the ancient world through the lens of Pompeii, from the leaders of civil society to the diverse crowd of humiliores who, in recent years, have reclaimed the spotlight in fieldwork on the buried city: ingénues [free women], freedwomen, and slaves, in their roles as wives, daughters, and concubines, at various stages of life, from birth to childhood, marriage, motherhood, and death. Thanks to the combination of all available narrative registers—inscriptions and graffiti, statues, reliefs and frescoes, everyday objects and jewelry—the centrality of the female universe in Roman civilization clearly emerges: from the activities of great social, economic, and religious importance that engaged high-born matrons and wealthy freedwomen, to the daily professions performed by free and slave women [spinners and weavers, innkeepers, saleswomen, bakers, doctors, sorcerers, prostitutes, and so on]. Catalogue of the exhibition organized by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii from April 16, 2025, to January 31, 2026.
